A casual way to wear leather leggings

I’ve seen leather leggings all over fashion sites, but I’ve been a little intimidated by them. I bought these last year and this is the FIRST time I’ve actually put them on. I tried to pair them with things most people have in their closets….a black sweater, white scarf, and some kind of sneaker. You may already be wearing this look with black jeans; to mix it up just swap out the jeans and throw on some leather leggings or moto leggings! If you aren’t comfortable showing your derriere, just make sure your sweater comes down long enough. And, if all black is too boring for you, try throwing on a scarf or sweater with a subtle print. This will give the outfit some contrast and dimension. Since the leggings are tight on the bottom half, I would stick to looser or chunkier fabrics on the top portion. And, if you want to dress it up, grab a simple black pump or sandal. dsc_0972.jpgDSC_0923DSC_0933DSC_0919DSC_0935DSC_0958DSC_0975

Leopard Love

BRRRRRR! Y’all it is cold outside! Since we were stuck at home for this snow day, I decided to take advantage of having a photographer and snap this AMAZING leopard coat (similar here). Some people may feel limited by the print, but it’s more versatile than you think as long as you treat it like a neutral. I layered mine with this deep green, bell-sleeved, velvety sweater from my last post. I’ve also been wearing these jeans and shoes on repeat (links to all 3 here).

Here you can really see the texture of the coat and the sweater. They are both so COZY! Thank goodness because it is BELOW FREEZING outside…in Houston! Mixing metals is kind of my thing so I wanted to explain how I do it. I paired these gold earrings and necklace (link here) with with this silver ring ( link here). The trick to mixing metals successfully is to wear a piece of jewelry that has both gold and silver in it to tie it all together.  Lots of earrings, bracelets, and watches are two toned and they make it easy to wear both silver and gold in your other accessories. My go to is my gold and silver David Yurman bracelet, unfortunately it is not pictured here…sorry!

Happy snow day cuties! Stay warm and safe!

**Special shout out to my husband, Mitch, for taking these pics in the freezing temps!

Sweater Weather

As I look in my closet, I think I should have named my blog addicted to neutrals because I swear that’s all I wear! Today, when I ran through ZARA I decided to jump out of my comfort zone…just a little. Instead of my typical beige, white, black, I found some tops/sweaters that were different than things I already own. I went for different colors, shapes, and textures.

I know, I know…right now you’re thinking, “Stripes? How is that different?” The truth is, I do own a lot of stripes, but this shirt is longer (more like a tunic) than I usually wear. I won’t be able to sport my usual half tuck with it, so I’ll have to style it differently. I’m thinking cover the rear and wear some tall boots. And for this frigid weather that just blew in, I can add my cute new pompom beanie!

Next to style the green, velvety sweater. This thing is SO soft! Its cut boxier so I can leave it out or slightly half tuck it. It also has bell sleeves, something I’ve never really worn, but excited to try.

Last, this jeweled, navy number (similar option here). The texture of this sweater sort of reminds me of carpet LOL I really like the details in the applique and I think it will be a fun piece to transition into the spring.

oh! I forgot to mention that EVERYTHING in ZARA was on sale. I got 3 sweaters (one not pictured), 1 long sleeve shirt, a ridiculous t-shirt (also not pictured), and this adorable beanie for less than $70!

How to Shop H&M

All right…my new years resolution is to share more with you here and over on my Instagram. I wanted to start out with a post about shopping at H&M. If you’ve seen the clothes I tag, you’ll notice a lot of them come from H&M. I fell in love with H&M’s low prices and broad variety when I lived in France in 2009. Now, we have one just down the street and I have to admit I buzz through quite often.

During my visits I have learned a few tricks that I’d like to share.

  1. Go in with an item in mind. This can minimize the stress of aimlessly looking through the many racks of clothes and give you a focus. If you are looking for a certain trend (velvet, pleats, floral, peplum, leather, etc.), you can keep an eye out for your particular need.
  2. Go up a size (or 2) in the pants especially. I wear a 6 in most pants, but I usually have to buy a 10 at H&M. They also tend to run a little long, so you may need them hemmed or if you are tall…lucky you! Most of their tops fit fairly true to size or slightly small. If you are busty or have larger arms stay away from fabrics without stretch and go up a size.
  3. Look at the materials used to make the item. Certain materials like rayon are difficult to clean and wrinkle easily so think about when you will wear it and if you want to spend the money to dry clean it or hand wash it. Also check for cotton because it may shrink if you plan to wash and dry your garment.
  4. Browse the outer racks or racks you can tell clearly have been organized to show just a few garments. If you have time, you can peruse the $10-$20 racks or the racks that have little organization, but don’t be surprised if its difficult to sort through and find an exact item in your size.
  5. Look for basics. H&M has an entire section of their store called basics! They have inexpensive pieces that you can easily mix and match into your wardrobe.
  6. Don’t forget to look at accessories. They have lots of jewelry, shoes, scarves, and purses that look designer. However, if you are allergic to nickel, stay away from the jewelry.

Most of these tips can be applied at any store, especially ones where there is discounted clothing. I hope you find them helpful!

Leather Love

I am so excited about this BCBGeneration leather jacket that I found at Macy’s! The second it got chilly (for 2 days) I decided I had to have a black, leather, moto jacket. This is my big splurge of the season. I usually try to find things more moderately priced, but I knew this would be a staple, especially in Houston with our mild climate. I gave myself a $250 budget and set out at the Galleria. I started at Nordstrom, but their jackets were slightly out of my price range. Then I tried Macy’s. When I had just about given up and was walking out the door feeling defeated there it was…sitting on the rack with a big red sign that said, “Take 40% off.” I didn’t even make it to the fitting room just tried it straight on and looked in a mirror. It was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I love the zipper details and buckles on the sides; it just makes me feel cool LOL. Since it was $348, but under the sale sign I rushed up to the cashier and asked if it was really 40% off…It was! I got the jacket for $225, just under my budget and I’ve been thinking of different ways to wear it ever since. It is so versatile! It goes with everything from dresses down to leggings. Check out what I paired it with below.

Here I put on a summer dress that I only got to wear once this year. The jacket makes it more fall appropriate and the shoes tie it all together. I recently had my 10-year high school reunion and this is what I had pictured I would wear in my head. Too bad I didn’t own the jacket yet…

I wore this outfit to work on Monday after the Astros won Game 5 of the World Series. I was exhausted (the game lasted until after midnight) but this was such an easy look to throw together last minute.

Whenever I’m running around on the weekends I like to wear something comfy (#leggings). Throwing this leather jacket on made me feel so much more put together than my usual sweatshirt or longsleeve.

#datenight – I always joke that I don’t have any “going out” clothes, but I think this outfit it worthy of a night out!

Here is the most basic outfit I could have put together, but the jacket gives it that extra “umph” as my dad would say! Fingers crossed that the cool front promised for tomorrow is actually cool enough that I can wear my new favorite piece. fingers crossed

feeling FANtastic

The Astros play the Yankees tonight and I can’t wait to watch! #gostros Today at work we could wear our Astros gear, but it is also the start of parent-teacher conferences. So, I didn’t want to look frumpy in my t-shirt. I got this new grey shirt from Academy and its a men’s small. The dark grey looks great with white and I love the huge logo. It reminds me of a graphic tee. It was also FINALLY cool enough today to wear a light jacket, so I decided to wear this neutral army green color. And…the best shoes for this 60s in the AM and 80 in the PM are open toe booties. Thank you TOMS!

OMG! I just realized I was still wearing my ID badge on my arm in the picture above! Whoops! #reallife

I love these earrings because they “go” with the blue and orange of the Astros, but they aren’t too matchy-matchy.

Look who decided to photobomb! She’s such a great prop. Secretly I think she just wanted to play with the ball, but I’m so glad she joined in!

Here’s to dressing up the regular old t-shirt for game day! GO ‘STROS!!!!

Endless Summer

Summertime in Texas can feel like it lasts forever. The only way to stay cool is to be in the water…if the water isn’t 90 degrees LOL. That means, a lot of the time we Texans are in swimsuits (from April-October….That’s half the year!). So, you’ve got to find one you feel confident in. Before I started writing this post, I came across this quote from one of my favorite people, #JenniferLawrence. I love her message and think we should all be proud of who we are. #yougogirl

My #NanetteLepore one piece is the best bathing suit investment I’ve ever made. Before this suit, I hadn’t worn a one piece since I was a kid. When I noticed prettier, less sports-like one pieces popping up, I knew it would be something I would spend a little extra $$ on. I’m so glad I did. To me it was worth it to pay more, to feel better, in the place I (and most people) have the least confidence.

I  am drawn to anything that has stripes on it, so this bathing suit spoke to me the second I saw it. When I tried it on in the dressing room, I loved how the multicolored middle defined my waist. I also love that you can take the strap off if you want to avoid the tan lines. Too bad I have a slight shorts tan from walking and playing tennis….#thatslife!

Here’s a little closer look at the details of the suit. The “belt” wraps  all the way around the back with a vertically striped pattern to continue defining the waist. You’ll also notice that I have my hat in almost every picture. I am pretty fair skinned and obviously freckled! I try to protect my skin from too much sun and these hats are the best way to keep the sun off my face and shoulders.

Along with a hat, you can’t forget #sunnies! These, from #Target, have been my favorite all summer. I wore them in this post too! I thought the blue would be limiting, but I’m loving the pop of color they add. They also go perfectly with the water and my cool, blue #TrinaTurk beach towel.

Being less than dressed in public can be intimidating, but you shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable at the pool. Finding a flattering suit can help you gain the confidence you need to have fun in the sun.

So find the suit that suits you.

Here are some suits for you to try so you can relax, enjoy, and feel confident by the pool.
