NYC Recap

OMG…NYC! I can’t believe I have had such a great opportunity to go 2 years in a row! I’ve now been 4 times (to visit) and each time I fall in love with the city a little bit more. This year, and last, I got to go to Columbia’s Teachers College to be a part of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project #TCRWP The days were filled with new learning, tips, tricks, and ways to be better teachers #teachernerd The evenings were filled with sightseeing, good food, and shopping.

While I was there I got to do some amazing things. I LOVED walking the High Line, a public park built on an old freight line above Manhattan’s West Side. As you walk, you’ll get a chance to see the Hudson River, old and new buildings, and beautiful art and gardens. It’s short-ish, about 1.5 miles, but still long enough that I wanted to make sure I had comfy shoes on. That’s why these #Adidas (pictured above) were my go-to any time we had to walk more than a short distance. Last year when I was here, EVERYONE had them on, so naturally, I NEEDED a pair. They turned out to be a great investment for this trip. They offer the comfort of tennis shoes while still being cool…at least I think so 🙂

Going shopping at #BergdorfGoodman was an absolute highlight as well. I went a few years back with my mom and was DYING to go again. It’s like a museum in there! First, they suck you in on the first floor with their gorgeous, designer handbags and once they’ve got you hooked they get you into the shoe department. While we were there, we tried on everything from #Celine to #Gucci. Not sure I loved everything…but we sure had a good time playing!

Then we went up another escalator and wound up surrounded by #The Row, #McQueen, #Prada, #Chanel, #Dior and more #Gucci. I love how the clothes are spread out, each one only having one or two sizes out to try. There’s no rummaging through; you can actually see the clothes. Granted, the clothes on that floor cost somewhere between $800 and $3,000, but still, you could see and touch and play with them. The only thing we had enough nerve to try on was a Gucci jacket modeled by my friend Brittany. It followed the #embroidery trend, but was just a hair out of our price range. If I remember correctly, it was $2,600. Image result for crying laughing emoji OH, and it had a giant tiger on the back!

Up another level or two (I can’t fully remember because my brain was on fashion overload) we found some clothes to try on. I tried on this beautiful, lace, royal blue, #DianeVon Furstenberg, tea length dress. If only I had someplace fancy to wear it…..?

Then we got into hats. Now, I never thought I was much of hat person, but these hats were pretty fun. I mean, who can’t smile at a yellow, flower/fruit crowned hat? And the other hat, well I call that my Indiana Jones look. LOL.

Thanks Brittany and Amy for being good sports and trying these on with me!

IMG_4462After we shopped, we saw a girl taking a picture in the middle of the street. My friends MADE me take this picture. I was so uncomfortable I waved at the chauffeur at the stop light. We made friends and then I got this great picture #nyc I hate to admit it, but they were right!

I almost ended this post forgetting to talk about what I was wore while in #NYC…WHOOPS! The #shoppingtrip was my first time wearing a crop top. I have to admit, I felt like I was yanking it down a bit, but the jacket thrown over my shoulders helped me feel more comfortable. Since I knew I would be showing my stomach a little, I wanted to keep the rest of my body pretty conservative. These high-waisted jeans were perfect with the crop top because they almost met, leaving just a peep of skin showing. Don’t knock it ’til you try it 😉

When we walked the High Line and when we walked in Central Park, the #adidas were clutch. Both of those times, I paired them with cuffed shorts (jean and white), a flowier shirt half tucked, and a long necklace. As you can see in the pics below, I have 2 different purses. I have the cross body bag that was great for walking in Central Park (we saw the Friends fountain, the Mall, and a concert!). Then the big blue/green bag I had on the high Line was great for lugging my big camera around. My suggestion is to bring one of each – one that’s larger and good as a travel carry on and a small cross body, in a neutral color, that won’t get in your way as you explore.

I thought I’d wrap it up with a few of my favorite things I saw that I couldn’t help but capture. Enjoy! #Chaneleverything

Mom Jeans!

I ♥ these mom jeans! I don’t know if it is because they remind me of the 90s or because they are so comfy, but let me tell you…they are FANTASTIC! Let me list the ways: they don’t stick to you on hot days like skinny jeans, they define the thinnest part of your body, you can bend and not feel like a plumber (wink, wink), and they are a totally new (ok old, but new) twist on jeans. I wore them first with my white, lacy, more feminine top out to lunch with my mom and BFF, then switched to a comfy tee when I went to casual dinner. Usually I would be fancier in the evening, but we were going to be eating wings and I know myself…white shirt + sauce = disaster. BTW – You have to check out how high the back pockets are! Image result for crying laughing emoji so LOL!

Oh! I also recently rediscovered my Chanel bag hiding in a closet at my mom’s house. I have been using it non-stop! It is the perfect size and the color is great any season. Also, the strap can double up and go short, or be undone to go cross body. Perfection.

Summer Oxford

I guess wearing a uniform for a decade made me a lover of oxford, or button down shirts. They are so classic and go with almost everything. I found this one when I was looking for something to wear to an Astros game. (GO ‘STROS!) We have been to a lot this year and I have worn the same shirt every time. This time I wanted to change things up. What I love about this shirt is how light weight and breathable it is. It hangs nicely, isn’t too stiff, and it’s really easy to do a half tuck with. The only downfall is that it is 100% rayon and hand wash only….ALWAYS read the care tags before purchase. Anyway, for the actual game, I wore the same shirt and belt, but with white shorts. I was able to repeat the outfit a couple days later by switching out my sandals to these faux suede ankle tie espadrilles and distressed jean shorts.

C’est La Vie

It’s HOT in HOUSTON. Literally the word HOT is in the word HOusTon. That’s life here in the Lone Star State! Because we have so much hot weather, I get tired of wearing shorts or workout clothes, so I decided to try all white. I threw on my favorite white skinnies and a breathable t-shirt. I have a secret love for graphic tees…SHHHH! This one is old, but here is a similar one I found that stays in the frenchy style. Click on the link to see the funny fraise LOL #oldnavy

These shoes were $9, yes $9 from #marshalls. I figured since the rest of my outfit was pretty simple, I’d throw in a fun pattern. #allthingsleopard

What’s your go-to summer wardrobe piece?

Embroidery Trend

This morning I decided to actually get dressed instead of just wear my typical lululemon attire. I bought this shirt earlier in the summer, but hadn’t worn it yet. I paired it with my favorite jeans and these cool, clear and mirrored sunglasses. Since I knew I would be running around today, I threw on my Sperry slip-on sneakers because I can walk all day in them.

Have you noticed that embroidery seems to be everywhere lately? What I like about this shirt, is that it incorporates that trend, without looking “costumey.” And, as usual, I have it half tucked! LOL What did we do before the half tuck?

Check out the bottom seam of my jeans. Hardly even a change and yet it feels SO fresh! These came this way, but truthfully, I have done this to 2 other pairs of jeans for an easy update.

When I went to put on my lipstick before I took pictures, I remembered that my sister-in-law had recently given me this adorable pink pouch from Neiman Marcus. I keep my lipstick in here and can easily move it between purses when I decide to switch it up.

Hat Trick

Problem: This morning I didn’t have time to do the full hair ordeal before I had to go meet some people. Solution: The fedora. I threw my hair in a low, messy bun sort of to the side with some pieces hanging down around my face and topped it off with my hat. Then I knew I wanted to keep the look light and airy, so I paired it with this flowy tank top and white jeans. I also picked these pointy toe, soft leather loafers from ALDO. They give this look a little more sophistication than my usual flip flops. And, BONUS, they are so comfortable. To finish up my look, I kept my purse in the same hue of blue, but with an added pop of color.

Confession: I’ve worn this hat a million times to the pool, but never out with an outfit. I was a little nervous I couldn’t pull it off, but decided to try it anyway. I actually got multiple compliments! #fedora
